Petition #4:
Reinstate Pluto back as a Planet
Petition To: "International Astronomical Union",
Scientists have voted and agreed in the IAU meeting in Prague, that Pluto is no longer a true planet just because the word "planet" have been redefined.
According to the new definition, a full-fledged planet is an object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become round due to the force of its own gravity. In addition, a planet has to dominate the neighborhood around its orbit. Pluto has been demoted just because it is considered to not dominate its neighborhood by having a satellite moon (Charon) that's about half the size of Pluto, while all the true planets are far larger than their moons. That is absurdly not an acceptable excuse.
Now our solar system officially only have 8 planets, while Pluto being unfairly categorized as a "dwarf-planet" instead of a true, real planet as it used to be called for the past 70 years. Academical textbooks, encyclopedias, diagrams and other teaching materials are forced to be rewritten to reflect this change.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the International Astronomical Union (IAU), forwith and unconditionally recognize the true status of Pluto as one of the nine legitimate planets in our Solar System and change its status to reflect this truth. We also request that the nine planets of our Solar System have their status as legitimate planets “frozen” so that this travesty cannot happen again.
Furthermore we request that the IAU acknowledges that it has breached its mission “to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation” by making this change on behalf of ALL the citizens of this planet without fair or due consultation.
Save our Solar System!
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

| Aco | Monterrey, Mexico | I much rather have 10 planets than 8. Let's make Pluto the planet limit ok? Anything smaller than our smallest planet, call it what you want. But then, that makes Eris a planet too! With a satellite of his own and everything! Welcome to the PLANETS family, Eris! Join PLUTO and the others as a PLANET. Worried that the family will grow too much, allowing things like Eris in? So define a BORDER to the Solar System, leave Pluto in and then demote whatever you please OUTSIDE but leave our own, dear little Pluto alone. | 26-Jan-2008 | |

| Laurel Kornfeld | Highland Park, New Jersey | The IAU statement that a "dwarf planet" is not a planet at all makes no sense. Only four percent of IAU members even voted on this and most are not planetary scientists. It's a terrible definition and must be reversed. | 27-Dec-2007 |
